Reading Plan
Information

"We know what a powerful part the home plays in each child's education so we decided to capitalize on that power by offering families more than generic advice to read their children. Though that is, and will always be sound advice, the Family Reading Plan offers more. It provides parents a menu of home reading activities that will complement the unique strengths and weaknesses of their children."
Dr. Nancy Grasmick, State School Superintendent

The Family Reading Plan is a reading initiative for pre-kindergarten through second grade children and their families that was introduced on October 20, 1999. Throughout schools in each school system, effective reading practices and individual skill development activities are shared between home and school. Family Reading Plan materials include a packet containing sample reading skills checklist and take home activities. School staff and families plan periodic times to discuss children's reading progress and establish plans for continued progress in reading.

Two key elements of this plan are the Compact for Reading Guide and the School-Home Links Reading Kit that were developed for teachers, families, and reading partners through the Compact for Literacy Initiative, an activity of the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education at the U.S. Department of Education.

The Reading School-Home Links activities provided here are keyed directly to reading activities that teachers typically do with children in school. The Home-Link Activity Locator at the beginning of each grade level School-Home Links are meant to assist teachers, parents, and tutors to identify which activity relates directly to a Maryland state Reading standard and Maryland Learning Outcome. These School-Home Links provide you with an extra opportunity for more learning at home.
